Welcome back Chronicler!

This week, the gap between who has access to real AI capability and who does not is becoming a market force in itself. From AWS recording a $15B annualized AI revenue run rate to Marc Andreessen declaring AGI already here, the infrastructure layer is where the real action is, and VCs are placing massive concentrated bets to reflect that.

Plus: Carry Waterfalls explained, VC jobs, and the AI tools quietly replacing your analyst stack.

As always, thank you for subscribing and engaging week-in week out. Still a work in progress, but I appreciate all 1,849 of you.

THIS WEEK IN VC & TECH
What matters this week

LEAD STORY

AWS AI's $15 billion annualized run rate signals that enterprise agentic AI adoption is finally translating to measurable revenue, not just hype. Amazon is betting $200 billion in 2026 capex on AI, and AWS's chip business has quietly become a $20 billion annual operation that could reach $50 billion as an external product.

VCs backing infrastructure, data center, and cooling startups need to understand that big tech's vertical integration is accelerating, meaning only companies with defensible proprietary tech or deep customer moats will survive. The margin question is critical: Amazon's willingness to monetize AI workloads at cloud scale is fundamentally reshaping pricing assumptions across the entire sector.

❝

When hyperscalers start translating AI investments into meaningful revenue, the infrastructure gold rush becomes a race for margin defense, not just capacity expansion.

QUICK HITS

Anthropic - Anthropic's Claude Managed Agents entered public beta with composable APIs for building cloud-hosted agents at scale, handling sandbox execution, credential management, and state tracking. Early adopters include Notion, Asana, and Sentry, signaling that production-grade agent infrastructure is becoming table stakes for founders building on LLMs.

TSMC - TSMC's Q1 revenue hit $35.6 billion on sustained demand for advanced AI accelerators, with price increases on leading-edge chips contributing meaningfully to outperformance. The company fabricates roughly 9 of every 10 advanced AI accelerators globally, cementing its chokepoint position in the infrastructure stack and validating concentrated geopolitical risk around Taiwan.

TikTok - TikTok announced a 1 billion euro investment in a second Finnish data center, extending its 12 billion euro European data sovereignty commitment in response to regulatory pressure. This concession to EU data localization demands gives VCs building data infrastructure in Europe meaningful policy tailwinds, making data sovereignty a genuine business driver rather than just compliance friction.

OpenAI - Sam Altman unveiled OpenAI's superintelligence policy blueprint, arguing that AI disruption requires a societal-scale economic restructuring similar to the Progressive Era and New Deal, including a nationally managed Public Wealth Fund. While dismissed by some as regulatory positioning, this framing is reshaping how VCs and governments think about AI risk mitigation and the implicit social contract needed for adoption.

The largest deals that you should know about

SiFive's $400M Series G signals the venture market's ruthless focus on AI infrastructure over everything else, as mega-rounds pour into the chips and systems powering artificial intelligence. The week proved Q2 will be a reckoning for non-AI startups competing for investor attention and capital.

Pattern: The week's funding landscape reveals a two-tier startup economy, with mega-scale AI infrastructure pulling in massive capital while mid-stage traditional software startups face a desert. Every major deal touches AI compute, defense, or the foundational layers supporting AI.

VENTURE BITE: One Concept in One Minute
CARRY WATERFALLS

Most people think carry is simple: profits split 80/20 between LPs and GPs, but waterfalls determine who gets paid first and why the order matters enormously.

CONCEPT

A carry waterfall is the sequence in which distributions flow to LPs and GPs when a fund exits a portfolio company. The structure determines whether GPs receive their carried interest (typically 20%) only after LPs recover their full investment plus a preferred return (usually 8% annually), or through alternative structures like European waterfalls where GPs participate earlier. The waterfall structure directly impacts LP returns and GP incentive alignment, making it one of the most negotiated terms between LPs and GPs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Understand how different waterfall structures affect realized returns for both LPs and GPs in a fund exit scenario.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Scenario: A $100M fund deploys $50M into one portfolio company. The company exits for $200M gross proceeds (4x). Fund terms: 20% carry, 8% annual preferred return, 5-year hold.

American Waterfall:

Step 1: LPs recover capital. $50M goes back to LPs.

Step 2: Preferred return. LPs are owed $50M x (1.08^5) = $73.5M total. Already received $50M, so $23.5M more owed.

Step 3: GP catch-up. After LPs reach $73.5M, GPs take 20% of remaining $126.5M = $25.3M.

Step 4: LPs receive the final 80% = $101.2M.
Result: LPs get $174.7M total. GPs get $25.3M in carry.

European Waterfall (for comparison):

After LPs recover $50M capital, remaining $150M splits 80/20: LPs get $120M, GPs get $30M.
Result: LPs get $170M, GPs get $30M. Slightly better for GPs in this scenario.

Quiz (Difficulty: Medium)

Q1. In an American waterfall, the catch-up provision allows the GP to receive 100% of distributions until the GP has earned what percentage of total profits?

Q2. A fund deploys $40M into a company that exits for $120M after a 4-year hold with an 8% preferred return. Assuming American waterfall and 20% carry, approximately how much do GPs receive?
