Welcome back Chronicler!

This week felt like the ground shifting under the AI narrative. Samsung and Broadcom just locked in a $200 billion chip supply deal that says the real fight for AI dominance has moved from raising the biggest round to securing the fab capacity to actually build the chips. Meanwhile Brussels and DC are both tightening the screws on Big Tech distribution power, and the money that did move this week went almost entirely into hard tech: robots, batteries, and custom silicon, not another app layer.

Plus: 24 jobs, plus an AI tool already underwriting $80 billion in assets.

As always, thank you for subscribing and engaging week-in week out. Still a work in progress, but I appreciate all 2,500 of you.

With Love,
Kev

THIS WEEK IN VC & TECH
What matters this week

LEAD STORY

This five year contract, running through 2030 on Samsung's 2 nanometer and below process, is the clearest signal yet that Samsung is becoming a genuine second source to TSMC for leading edge AI silicon, not just a discount alternative. For VCs backing chip design startups, that matters because a viable second foundry reduces the single point of failure risk that has forced many AI accelerator companies to accept whatever TSMC allocation they can get, often years out. It also shows the real bottleneck in the AI buildout has shifted from capital to fabrication capacity: hyperscalers and chip designers are now locking up multi year wafer commitments the way they once locked up compute contracts. Expect more financing structures tied to prepaid capacity reservations rather than pure equity, mirroring how this deal was likely structured.

Foundry capacity, not capital, is now the binding constraint on the AI buildout.

QUICK HITS

EU fines Google $1 billion for search and Play Store antitrust violations  The European Commission fined Google roughly 890 million euros for favoring its own services in Search results and restricting how Play Store developers could steer users to cheaper payment options elsewhere. It raises the compliance cost of building on Google's distribution rails for any startup operating in the EU.

DOJ to fast track merger probes by curbing information requests  The Justice Department will narrow initial information requests in merger reviews, resolving straightforward deals faster while saving deep scrutiny for the riskiest transactions. For founders and investors counting on acquisition as an exit path, a shorter review window could meaningfully compress time to close.

Midjourney acquired the astrology app Co-Star  AI image and video generator Midjourney acquired astrology app Co-Star, absorbing its roughly two dozen employees and 4.3 million monthly users, terms undisclosed. It is a sign that cash rich AI labs are increasingly buying habit forming consumer distribution rather than building it themselves.

Monday.com lays off hundreds to focus on AI  Monday.com cut about 630 jobs, roughly 20 percent of headcount, to reorganize around a leaner AI work platform, joining a growing list of companies citing AI as the reason for layoffs. AI driven restructuring is no longer just a distressed startup story.

How owning AI deployment expands your career

Across product, ops, and CX teams, a new kind of role is taking shape: the person responsible for making AI actually work, day to day. In this roundtable, three people living this shift share what it's really like: Simone Santiago Broad (Yoco), Yelva Espinoza (Zumba Fitness), and Fin's Dave Lynch. You'll hear how they carved out these roles, what the job looks like across industries, the skills they'd hire for, and the challenges they're tackling right now.

MONEY IN MOTION
The deals that shaped the week

Travis Kalanick's "physical AI" robotics startup Atoms just pulled in $1.7 billion, more than four times the size of any other deal this week, a sign investors are betting the next trillion-dollar bet isn't software, it's digitizing physical industry itself.

Atoms | Physical AI / Robotics | $1.7 billion | Lead: Andreessen Horowitz | July 22, 2026

Meshy AI |  AI for 3D generation  |  Series B, ~$400 million ($1.5B valuation)  |  IDG Capital, Matrix Partners China, Monolith  |  July 21, 2026  Link

Sila |  Battery technology (silicon anode)  |  $300 million private funding  |  Atreides Management, Sutter Hill Ventures  |  July 21, 2026  Link

Etched |  AI inference chips / hardware  |  Series C, $300 million ($10.3B valuation)  |  Sequoia Capital  |  July 23, 2026  Link

Augustus |  Fintech (dollar banking infrastructure)  |  Series B, $180 million ($1B valuation)  |  Tiger Global  |  July 21, 2026  Link

❝

Pattern: Hard tech is eating software's lunch this week: robotics, batteries, and custom AI chips together pulled in $2.7 billion of the $2.98 billion raised across these five deals, dwarfing the one pure fintech round. Investors are increasingly chasing physical infrastructure plays that support the AI buildout rather than another app layer on top of it.

🚀 Leni

Leni is an accuracy first AI platform built for investment professionals, including VC, PE, and real estate teams, that turns messy documents and siloed systems into structured, source linked analysis. It handles underwriting, portfolio monitoring, and IC memo drafting with a verification layer that surfaces conflicting data points instead of quietly guessing, which matters when a wrong number in due diligence can sink a deal. Backed by Google Startups and already supporting more than $80 billion in assets, it landed as the number 3 Product of the Day on Product Hunt with over 380 upvotes.

🪉 Harmonic.ai - Indexes over 30 million private companies and tracks hiring, traffic, and product signals so VCs can source pre-seed and stealth stage deals before competitive auctions begin.

🧪 PortfolioIQ - An Associate AI for portfolio monitoring that drafts LP letter summaries and board meeting tearsheets directly from portfolio company data, saving funds hundreds of hours a year.

👨‍💻 Mantle Clerk - An AI assistant built into Mantle's cap table platform that reads legal documents and closing paperwork to record equity events and draft the next required action.
