Welcome back Chronicler!

This week Nvidia showed the industry a new playbook: pay $6 billion for an AI startup's brain and talent, and leave the company standing so nobody has to file for antitrust review. Meanwhile the biggest checks in venture didn't go to another chatbot, they went to missiles, satellites, and orbital data centers. Feels like the market quietly decided hard tech is the new soft landing.

Plus: a $1B hypersonic missile deal, 10 VC Jobs and a due diligence tool that reads a pitch deck for you.

As always, thank you for subscribing and engaging week in week out. Still a work in progress, but I appreciate all 2,200 of you.

With Love,
Kev

THIS WEEK IN VC & TECH
What matters this week

LEAD STORY

Nvidia is paying $6 billion to non-exclusively license Poolside's model-building system, and it's making job offers to 109 of Poolside's engineers, all while leaving the company itself intact and its founders in place. That's neither an acquisition nor an investment: it's a new template where Big Tech captures an AI startup's crown jewel IP and best people without a merger filing, a control premium, or antitrust review. It also exposes how fragile even frontier model startups have become: Poolside reportedly had six weeks to find $2 billion for a 40,000 GPU cluster and couldn't close it, forcing this workaround instead. If you're underwriting compute heavy model companies, start writing IP licensing and talent release provisions into your term sheets now, because this may be the default off ramp when a portfolio company can't fund its own compute roadmap.

Nvidia just showed Big Tech how to acquire an AI startup's brain without buying the company.

QUICK HITS

Apple  Apple is cutting hundreds of roles across its Siri and Vision Pro groups, two AI and hardware bets that have underdelivered. It's another sign that even cash rich incumbents are reallocating talent away from lagging AI products, which should worry any startup competing for the same engineers.

Nvidia's Price Hikes  Nvidia's server partners have warned major customers that Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell systems will cost over 15% more starting early 2027, driven by soaring memory prices. That raises the burn rate for every AI startup renting or buying next gen compute, so bake higher infrastructure costs into your 2027 models now.

Mistral  Mistral struck a hundreds of millions euro partnership with Saudi PIF backed HUMAIN to build Arabic language models and route compute through Saudi data centers. It's a sign Europe's AI champions are using Gulf capital and compute as a growth channel outside the US hyperscaler ecosystem.

Japan's Rapidus  Japan's government added roughly $944 million in fresh state funding for domestic chip foundry Rapidus as it races to compete with TSMC. Leading edge chip capacity is increasingly being built with sovereign balance sheets, not private capital, and that's a dynamic VCs backing AI hardware need to price in.

MONEY IN MOTION
The largest deals that you should know about

A startup building hypersonic missiles pulled in $800 million in equity plus a $250 million credit line this week, and a separate startup raised $250 million to put AI data centers in orbit. Defense and space are commanding the mega round treatment that used to be reserved for large language model labs.

Pattern: This week's biggest checks skipped consumer AI apps entirely and went straight into capital intensive hard tech: missiles, satellites, orbital compute, and autonomous vehicles, categories that need years of manufacturing before revenue shows up. Several of these are fast follow-on rounds rather than new seed bets, which tells you investors are chasing proven teams, not hunting for new ones.

THIS WEEK’S STANDOUT

Launched this week by SMRK VC partner Vlad Tislenko, Startup Due Dil orchestrates ten AI agents to turn a pitch deck and supporting documents into a structured, source cited due diligence report in about 10 minutes. It flags claims as red, yellow, or green signals across team, market, competitors, traction, cap table, and legal risk. For partners drowning in first look screening, it compresses hours of grunt work into a quick pre meeting gut check, without pretending to replace reference calls.

🫆Evertrace - A founder detection engine used by 250+ VC funds that surfaces stealth stage founders from GitHub, patent, and trade registry signals weeks before they hit any deal sourcing database.

🧩 Mantle Clerk - An AI assistant layered onto Mantle's cap table platform that lets founders and investors issue grants, model new rounds, and ask plain language questions about equity structure.

⚡️FundSpark - An AI copilot for investors that filters deal flow against your thesis, automates diligence checklists, tracks portfolio performance, and generates LP reports.
