Welcome back Chronicler!
This week the biggest story in venture wasn't a deal, it was a document. Anthropic's prospectus hit the wire and suddenly every other company eyeing the fall IPO window looked a lot less sure of itself, with Oura pulling its listing on the very day it was meant to price. Meanwhile private money kept piling into agents, and SoftBank financed its OpenAI bet with the biggest junk bond sale on record.
But wait, There’s more: Open AI launches Dots to compete with Meta’s muse, watch the 2 minutes launch video in the Best take section.
Plus: this week's Venture Bite on pro-rata rights and a new tool that already has your fund answering founder pitches without asking you.
As always, thank you for subscribing and engaging week-in week out.
With Love,
Kev
THIS WEEK IN VC & TECH
What matters this week

LEAD STORY
The prospectus, seen by Reuters and the FT, shows roughly $4.6B of 2025 revenue (up about twelve times), an operating loss above $8B, $518B in future compute commitments, and nearly a quarter of revenue coming from just two customers.
The losses are not the story for VCs. Issuers were already steering around the Anthropic window before the filing leaked, and Oura, Holtec and Bamboo all pulled or paused within days, because a listing this size will absorb the attention of long-only and sovereign buyers for at least a quarter.
The move now: if you sit on a late-stage board, stop telling the company to wait for the window and start lining up secondaries and strategic M&A. And if your portfolio builds on Claude, assume a public Anthropic with compute at 58% of operating expenses will push API pricing and terms toward margin.
The biggest IPO in history will also be the biggest drain on everyone else's exit window.
QUICK HITS
Oura Oura shelved its $2.2B Nasdaq listing on the day it was due to price, despite a book reportedly four times covered and revenue growing 90%. If a hot consumer hardware story with real demand won't go out, the fall window is effectively closed for anyone who can afford to wait.
Oracle and Stargate Oracle sent a force majeure notice on Project Jupiter, a 2.45GW New Mexico campus, as gas pipeline and permitting setbacks threaten its 2028 start. When the anchor tenant on a flagship Stargate site starts papering legal exits, energy permitting is the real cap on AI compute, and power and grid startups just gained leverage.
DTCP Germany's DTCP hit a €455M first close on its debut defence fund, backed by Deutsche Telekom, Porsche SE, EIFO and Danica, targeting Series B and later in AI, autonomy, cyber and space. Corporate strategics are now funding Europe's defence growth stage directly, so expect industrial partners on those cap tables, not just financial GPs.
SoftBank SoftBank priced an $11.1B high-yield bond, the largest junk deal on record, with dollar tranches paying up to 9.75% to cover its OpenAI commitments. A big slice of the frontier AI bet is now financed with near-10% debt, and that leverage belongs in every VC's read on frontier lab pricing.

What does a $120k hire actually cost you?
A $120K salary might look straightforward on paper. But once you factor in employer taxes, statutory benefits, payroll, and country-specific employment costs, the number can look pretty different.
And those costs can vary significantly depending on where your employee is based. Before you build your hiring budget, or make an offer, it helps to know the full picture.
Oyster’s Global Hiring Cost Calculator lets you compare employment costs across 120 countries and estimate what a hire could really cost your business.
MONEY IN MOTION
The deals that shaped the week
Instinct, an AI personal agent that only launched invite-only in August, picked up $1B at a $10B valuation, four times where it was priced a month ago. Investors are betting consumer do-it-for-you agents are the next platform, even as Meta moves onto the same turf.
Instinct | Consumer AI agents | Series C, $1B | Sequoia, Benchmark and Coatue | Sept 28, 2026 Link
Tekever | Defense tech, AI drones (Portugal/UK) | Series D first close, $580M | UC Investments and Baillie Gifford | Sept 23, 2026 Link
Island | Cybersecurity for enterprise AI agents | Series F, $400M | Evolution Equity Partners | Sept 24, 2026 Link
Enveda | AI drug discovery | Series E, $311M | Catalio Capital Management | Sept 23, 2026 Link
Ema | Enterprise AI agents (US/India) | Series B, $77M | Creaegis | Sept 23, 2026 Link
Agents ran through the whole week: building them (Instinct, Ema), securing them (Island) and aiming them at drug discovery (Enveda), while a US university endowment leading Tekever shows European defense tech is now a mainstream asset class.
VENTURE BITE: One Concept in One Minute
Pro-Rata Rights
Pro-rata is not a free option: it's a promise you have to fund with reserves, and it's often the first thing a new lead tries to cut back.
A pro-rata right lets an existing investor buy enough of a future round to keep their ownership percentage. It is a right, not an obligation, and it costs real money: say you own 10% and the company raises a $20M Series B that sells 20% of the company. Sit out and you drop to 8% (10% x 80%); to stay at 10% you need to buy 10% of the new round, which is $2M. Because round sizes grow faster than early check sizes, a seed fund that wrote a $500K check can face a pro-rata bill several times that within two rounds, which is why disciplined funds set reserves at the start and decide early which companies earn follow-on money. And in priced-round documents the right usually only goes to investors above a negotiated ownership threshold, so a small check may not come with it at all.
TRUE OR FALSE
In the NVCA model Investors' Rights Agreement, the right to buy into future rounds automatically goes to every preferred stockholder, no matter how small their investment.
AI TOOLKIT FOR VCs
Our curated stack for the modern investor
The agentic era needs a different CRM. That’s Attio.
Parallel, Turbopuffer, and Wordsmith run their entire GTM motion on Attio, with agents that chase every buying signal, build pipeline, and move deals forward, 24/7.
THIS WEEK'S STANDOUT
Launched on Product Hunt on September 25, Bleetz turned about 2,000 real VC funds into simulated investor agents that founders' AI agents can pitch, with a YES unlocking the fund's contact details. Your fund is probably already in there answering pitches without you, so it's worth claiming your agent and turning it into a free first-pass filter against your actual thesis. Early days: the maker admits the agents say YES too easily and check-size data is thin.
🎩 Attio - The AI-native CRM many funds run deal flow on shipped a run-by-run log for agent workflows plus steps that turn calls and emails into actions, so automated pipeline work is finally auditable.
🧠 GBrain - Garry Tan's open-source agent memory system, relaunched this week, builds a self-updating graph of people and companies from your meetings, email and notes, which is basically relationship-driven sourcing on autopilot.
🧘♂️ Public AI Agents for Prediction Markets - Public launched agents that trade on Kalshi event contracts or feed prediction market odds into a broader portfolio, a useful look at how event signals may start showing up in investment workflows.
