Welcome back Chronicler!

This week the AI slowdown conversation flipped on its head. It was not regulators pumping the brakes, it was the labs themselves, and markets reacted like the exit clock for every illiquid AI stake just got pushed back a year. Add a $3 billion tunnel bet from Elon Musk's Boring Company and a new fund backed entirely by sitting general counsels, and you have got a week that is a good reminder the biggest risk to your portfolio does not always come from where you are looking.

Plus: 29 Jobs, The Boring Company's $3 billion round, and a look at how AI is eating due diligence in The Stack.

As always, thank you for subscribing and engaging week-in week out.

With Love,
Kev

THIS WEEK IN VC & TECH
What matters this week

LEAD STORY

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay arguing frontier labs should deliberately slow capability gains to let safety research catch up, and within hours Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly agreed. OpenAI used the moment to rule out going public in 2026, pushing one of the most anticipated listings in tech to at least 2027, while chip and AI stocks sold off sharply and SoftBank shares dropped as much as 13% because its illiquid $64.6 billion OpenAI stake cannot convert to cash until a listing happens. The non-obvious signal for VCs: the loudest call for a slowdown came from the labs themselves, not regulators, which reframes pace of innovation as a self-imposed risk factor that public markets are now pricing directly into related equities. Investors holding large private AI stakes should plan for exit timelines measured in years, not quarters, and stress-test portfolio marks against the possibility that marquee AI IPOs keep slipping.

❝

The AI slowdown was not ordered by Washington, it was declared by the labs themselves, and it just froze the exit clock for everyone holding illiquid AI paper.

QUICK HITS

Meta / Stilla.ai  Meta acquired Stockholm-based Stilla.ai roughly eight months after it left stealth, absorbing its team to build out Meta Business Agent for WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram commerce. Another data point that Big Tech is acqui-hiring promising AI teams before they even reach a seed round, compressing the exit timeline European early-stage investors can realistically plan around.

TSMC  TSMC posted a 53% jump in monthly sales as AI infrastructure demand keeps outpacing its expanded capacity, with Broadcom separately flagging that packaging constraints will limit chip supply further into 2026. For AI startups, guaranteed compute access is becoming as central to diligence as the model itself.

GCVC  A new early-stage fund called GCVC launched backed by more than 50 sitting general counsels from companies including Salesforce, Circle and Rippling, with law firm Wilson Sonsini as its first institutional LP. A narrow but telling signal that legal and compliance tech is becoming its own venture category, with the eventual buyers acting as scouts and check-writers from day one.

California AI regulation  Governor Newsom signed a package of laws including Adam's Law, requiring AI chatbot operators to run risk assessments before rollout, imposing fines up to $1 million per child harmed, and creating a path for families to sue chatbot operators directly. The most aggressive state-level AI liability regime yet, and any consumer AI startup serving minors now faces a compliance and litigation bar that did not exist a month ago.

MONEY IN MOTION
The deals that shaped the week

Elon Musk's tunneling company pulled in a $3 billion Series D led by the United Arab Emirates, a sovereign wealth backer betting on underground infrastructure rather than AI, a sign that non-AI megadeals from state investors are muscling back into the biggest rounds even as AI dominates the rest of the leaderboard.

The Boring Company | Transportation and infrastructure | Series D, $3 billion | Lead: United Arab Emirates | Sept 10, 2026 Link

Cognition | AI coding agents | Series E, $2 billion | Lead: Andreessen Horowitz and Accel | Sept 8, 2026 Link

Motive | AI for physical operations | Growth financing, over $1.3 billion | Lead: General Catalyst | Sept 10, 2026 Link

Stoke Space | Aerospace, reusable rockets | Series E, $1 billion | Lead: Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital | Sept 8, 2026 Link

Temporal | AI infrastructure, orchestration | Series E, $550 million | Lead: Lightspeed Venture Partners | Sept 14, 2026 Link

❝

The week's biggest checks split between hard infrastructure, AI coding agents, and unglamorous physical-operations software, showing investors are willing to write billion-dollar rounds well outside pure foundation-model plays. Motive choosing a mega private round over its IPO filing suggests some late-stage companies still prefer private capital to public market scrutiny.

Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads

Blu Dot used Roku Ads Manager to drive incredible results for its furniture sales event. Its strategy hinged on custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.

“Roku has been a top performer,” said Blu Dot’s Claire Folkestad. “We have seen…CPMs lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”

THIS WEEK'S STANDOUT

Built by 1752vc, a firm that evaluates 4,000+ startups a year, this tool gives founders investor-grade, slide-by-slide feedback on their pitch decks in minutes, trained on 25,000+ real decks and the investor decisions that followed. It took the number one Product of the Day spot on Product Hunt. For VCs, worth watching both as a sourcing signal and as a preview of how deck screening itself is being automated.

Startup Due Dil - Runs ten AI agents to verify founder claims and surface risks across decks, financials, cap tables and legal docs, cutting initial due diligence to about ten minutes.

Standard Metrics - The category-leading portfolio monitoring platform now layers an AI Analyst on top of its investor and portfolio company data, used by firms like General Catalyst and Bessemer for LP reporting and benchmarking.

Landscape VC - Purpose-built for market mapping, lets investors drag companies into custom competitive categories and generate shareable, interactive market maps instead of static slides.

Grata - An AI-driven search engine covering 22 million plus private companies that lets investors describe a target company in plain English to surface founder-led and bootstrapped businesses standard databases miss, strong for proprietary deal sourcing.
